Leaking thermostat housing?

Hi,

I attached the directions from my manual for replacing it. Take a look through them to make sure you didn't miss anything.

Now, is it actually leaking from where the housing is mounted on the engine block? When you had it apart, did you fully remove the old gasket? Additionally, did you use sealant on the bolts holding the housing on? That is a step that is often missed and will allow coolant to leak past the bolts.

It's a Chevy Equinox when I took old one off there was no gasket and no kind of sealer had been put on anything the bolt at back has a notch in housing so you can slide it over bolt, should there be sealant put on the housing?

It wouldn't hurt to put a thin coating of RTV on the matting surface. However, you have to put RTV on the threads of the bolts. They go into a water jacket and coolant will leak if you don't install it there.

I will try that because that about where it's leaking where back bolt it with that slot do I need to put it all the way up the bolt and is it RTV water pump and housing sealant.

That sounds like it would work. The directions above provide a GM part number for the RTV. See if you can cross-reference the OEM part number with what you have.

Also, cover all threads with sealant. Don't be afraid to put it on somewhat thick. Once you install the bolt, you may want to wait for a bit to allow the RTV to dry. See what the directions are on the product you have.
