Steering problem
2002 Other Rover Models 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic

My key will often get stuck in a locked position and will not turn in any direction so that I can't start it.. most times a slight turn of the steering wheel in either direction will free it. but I have been stranded for over an hour at times trying to get the key to turn. I have tried pressing on the brake, tried to put into neutral etc. nothing works. Sometimes after waiting over 2 hours it will just turn without a problem. Is it because it is on a timer and Is this a safety feature to deter thieves?
can anyone help I am tired of getting stranded.
