Drive Train Axles Bearings problem

Hello,
I have a very old Series 1 land rover which is causing a great deal of concern with the steering, there is a lot of play on the wheel 1/4 turn before it responds, there are some odd components that seem to have a lot off slack, can you advise in where i should look and check, this is a farm truck and we are quite remote in outback Australia, our usually mechanic is away from the station and will not be back for some time,
