I have just bought a 2003 Freelander with 85,000 KM. There is a rattle noise louder when just started. I have taken it to a non LandRover garage for an inspection. They diagnosed it as the solinod on the air intake. They are checking to see if the air intake needs to be replaced as well. The solinod will cost about $600 to repair if the intake needs to be replaced then $2000. It is a good garage but not landrover.
I called Landrover to see about cost and if this is a common problem. The service tech on the phone said didn't know what they were talking about if you have engine noise it is probably big engine problems and we'd likely need a new engine.
Have you heard of this air intake problem? The noise does not change with increased rpms and it doesn't seem to make much noise when driving
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi there,

I would go find a Land Rover mechanic, i would be getting a second opinion, bearing noise is very specific, but i am un aware of any solenoid that can cause this problem, i do care for a few of these cars in my business, and generally they are quite good except for a fer transmission problems, but these were normally fixed under warranty when new.
