the engine will start to tick after it has warmed up in a very short time..3-5 mins, it doesnt do it while driving, that started a few days after I purchased vehichle. I had some oil leak repairs done after I started hearing the noise...it also had a hesiitation when accelerated in the beginning too. After I picked the vehichle up from the mechanic..a few days, I was idling and it just shut off, then it kept doing this within a 1 hour time frame, 3 times, then right before my destination it did it while driving. each time I would turn the truck off and wait a few minutes before trying to start it back up, it didnt take long for it to start up again, 3-4 tries,i it kept taking longer to restart each time. I have had it parked since 4-5 days and have started it each day, it has started each time. Im unsure what the problem is, I appreciate any help or advice you could give me, thank you for your time. Rodney, will donate when I receive response, thanks again. Does it sound like a lifter problem?

Hello,

When you turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over can you hear the fuel pump run in the tank for 5 seconds? If so it sounds like you have a crankshaft angle sensor that is not working correctly. Here is the location so you can check it out in the diagrams below. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Yep, the crankshaft sensor connector was shot! I had to get a new pigtail and I get a new sensor since I was doing the job anyway.

enter your question...i own a 2002 land rover discovery II series when i go to start it the engine turns over for a few seconds and then turns off. it won't stay started. when my mechanic hooked the car up to his computer for a diagnosis it said something was up with the security system being activated.

So the security light is on or flashing?Did he tell you any code's number's he got out of the computer?

well i just spoke with my mechanic and it is not the security system. he told me that he did get it to stay started only after he sprayed carberator spray . he is going to check the fuel pump and fuel pressure. what do you think now?

There is a fuel cut off that is why i asked if the security light was on.Keep me posted on what they find with the lack of fuel pressure or lack of injector pulse.

1998 Land Rover Discovery V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I am trying to help an international student work on his Land Rover Discovery. After replacing his alternator he had to jump start the car. He said he let in run for about 10 minutes trying to recharge the battery. Because that didn't work he attempted to jump it again and the anit-theft system went off. When you try to start it now, the only sound you get when turing the key is one click that sounds like it is coming from under the dash.
I checked all of the fuses and none appeared blown. The owner tells me after speaking with a dealer about the alarm, because it continued to go off if you tried to start it, they gave him some type of "code" that turned it off.
Any ideas on what might be causing the failure to start?

If you are getting a click when the ignition is turned it is more than likely the starter solenoid. This may have become overloaded due to the jump starting. This could sound like it's coming from the lower dash area but in reality the starter is in this general area of the engine bay and sound may be travelling through the body. I would recommend getting under the vehicle on the passanger side behind the front tire. The starter will be located at the rear of the motor on the passanger side it will be mounted to the bell housing. Have someone try to start the vehicle. If you here a click coming from this area you need a starter. Let me know if this isn't the case.

As for the alternator. You would need to run the car for at least a half hour - forty five minutes to recharge the battery. Also have the battery checked as a failed alternator can often times kill a battery in the process.

i was driving down the road came to a stop at a light and the truck died. it wouldnt turn over after that. it seems that its not getting fuel into it. i ve tried jumping it off but nothing. i got it to crank a few times and it would sputter then die again. the only other problem i have had is a rattling coming from what i believe is the exhaust. i thought it might be the catalytic converter. if that is the case please let mme know how to fix that as well. please help

Do below to determine if its fuel or spark problem

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs,coil's resistances,distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

Starter replaced 12/2/09 by dealer, new battery (600 cold cranking amps) 1/11/10. The car still won't start without a jump or being hooked up to an electric battery charger for 15-20 minutes. Landrover dealersays that it's the alternator putting out only 12.5 amps rather than the norm of 14+, therefore wanting to put in a new alternator. I'm skeptical especially since it wouldn't start with a brand new battery. Any thoughts? Thanks

Could be that something is draining the battery or the alternator with the voltage of 12.5volts not increasing to 14.5 volts or better

Or a problem within these areas starter, starter relay, park/neutral switch and ignition switch-blown fusible link/s

Ran out of gas, have put at least 3 gallons and vehicle still doesn't want to start? Do I need to fill it more, did I create a bigger problem by letting it run out of gas?

Hi there,

you may have damaged the fuel pump by letting it run dry, you best start by checking that you have fuel pressure & flow.

start by checking the immoboliser is OFF

Theft alarm LED flashes to indicate the following conditions:
Slow Flash - Immobilized only, or immobilized and armed.
Rapid Flash - Volumetrically armed.
Intermittent Rapid Flash - Perimetrically armed.
No Flash for 10 Seconds - Mislock.
Continuously Lit - Immobilized and driver's door open or ignition turned on.
Anti-theft system provides perimeter (perimetric) protection against unauthorized opening of doors, hood and tailgate. This function is also triggered when driver's door switch is lifted and ignition switch is turned on. Perimetric arming is activated when vehicle is locked using door key or transmitter. Alarm can be disarmed using transmitter or door key. If system is armed, locking or unlocking door with door key must be done in less than 5 seconds, or alarm will sound. Cranking function is disabled when armed.

have by-passed the starter to manually start the car because it wouldnt turn over or start with the key. car turns over but wont start when by-passed and turned over manually. have changed the crank sensor and checked ignition which is working properly. ive tried to locate the diagnostic plug without any luck to see if i could get the diagnostic tool to tell me anything. it was having previous problems not starting but when put in neutral and back into park it seemed to fix the problem. now nothing, if there is any ideas you can give me on maybe solving this problem i would greatly appreciate it.

Check and test the neutral safety switch, also jumper the wiring connector and see if it cranks over

95 Discovery, no start condition, new spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor.
Cranks with sporadic combustion , typical for low fuel pressure. Fuel pump
pressure measured before filter ca.100 PSI. Fuel filter replaced. Fuel pressure
at the rail , low. I purchased fuel pressure regulator but I can not locate it.
I need info on its location and re and re procedure . Thanks Michael

My Land Rover 1994 V8 Discovery doesn't start, it cranks but doesn't start, battery is fine, alternator is good but just won't start. The plugs are getting old but are still in position at least to start the car. Any help will be appreciated.

It will not start, turns but not kicking and has a little clunk noise. when you try to start all lights come on as well. Just no kick to start. would a timing chain cause this problem?

a timing chain cold cause this, but scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge auto parts rent it. See link.
