lag at about 80km/hr

Hi, I thought it may be a transmission problem and a friend who drove with me said his wife had same issue with her vehicle. About $2,000 of unnecessary repairs later he was told it was the catalytic converter - and a $5,000 repair job.

Any suggestions on how I can avoid getting ripped off and identify the problem correctly from the get go?
