I have a loud knocking sound coming from the engine and I can't tell if it's from the top or bottom of the engine.

What I wanted to do is remove the oil pan so I can look at the crankshaft and the connecting rods but I can't get the oil pan off.

Do I have to remove the engine in order to do remove it?

Our database doesn't say to remove engine, but, it looks like you remove about everything else.

You should be able to use a long metal shank to listen at the valve covers and oil pan, where it sounds the loudest would be where I would look. You place the tip of metal shank on the valve covers/cam cover, whatever. The other end of the tool goes on that bone backside of ear, helps magnify the sound. Do the same thing at the crankcase.

Is your oil pressure ok?

If you want the procedure from our database for removing oil pan, let me know.

Yes, the oil pressure is good.

I would much rather take the heads off then try the oil pan again :-)

I will use the shank idea, thank VERY much!

If you use the tool to listen, just make sure you don't get anything caught in fan--belt--pulleys or anything.
Here is the procedure, oil pan/crankcase.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
Lift vehicle by supporting the frame.
Remove under cover.
Drain engine oil.
Remove front wheels.
Remove oil level dipstick from level guage tube.
Remove radiator under fan shroud.
Remove the shift on the fly from axle housing.
Remove suspension cross member fixing bolts, 2 pieces each per side and remove suspension cross member.
Remove axle housing assembly, four fixing bolts from houswihng isolator side, and mounting bolts from wheelo side. At this time support the axle with garage jack and remove axle housing assembly, 4x4.
Remove steering wheel unit assembly.
Remove starter fixing bolts.
Remove oil pan fixing bolts.
Remove oil pan using seal cutter.
You have to use some of your own judgement with these database procedures. If you see a better way then use your own initiative. You will have to decide if this is something you want to tackle.
