I have a 2004 Kia Spectra that is making a grinding noise from the front wheels. My mechanic told me today that it needed a new right front wheel bearings and it would cost $500 installed. Is that reasonable? I have been smelling what I thought was gas in the front compartment when first starting the car up, is this part of the bearing issue?

Hello and thanks for donating.

A faulty wheel bearing would not cause any type of smell but would definitely cause a grinding noise. The repairs for replacing RF wheel bearing should only be around $150 and the part itself shouldn't be more than $50. So $500 seems very high to me...

I talked to the mechanic and he said he was quoting me the price for both the bearing and the hub, just in case they too needed to be replaced. Does this sound resonable? I talked to another Mechanic and they quoted me $380 for 2 new bearings to be replaced including labor, but that didn't include the hubs.

Here is a fair quote for replacing both of your vehicle's front wheel bearings AND hubs, including labor and parts pricing..
