That's exactly right.

I don't know what I'm looking for at the hardware store. The ones that I came up with were either too thick or a different shape. What I really want if at all possible is an exact replacement part. I might try the odd shape if it comes to that but I want a part that I know will fit before I open up the brakes again. When I changed the shoes and drums before I used the old ones and I don't want to do that this time. I'm probably going to open them up in September and see if they need anything. If they do, I want those washers on hand before I take the drums off.

This is a problem that the auto parts stores should carry a guaranteed solution for. I'm going to have to contact some manufacturers and see if anyone can set it up, like in a Help! package.

I wouldn't be surprised if they already did.

I know the ACE hardware near me carries spring washers.

What do they do at auto shops?

well, honestly, I've never lost one, or found one that was broken.

But if I did ever find myself in that situation, I would just get one from a hardware store.

I can't remember if I used a new snap ring or not, but I don't understand how it occurred to anyone to leave just one or two parts out of a hardware kit. Brakes are critical and I distrust reusing any parts. The whole industry doesn't think that part is important, I guess, but it's a tiny, cheap part and why not just change it out?

It wasn't in the exploded view from the parts department.
and i can't find any pictures suggesting there is one there in the service manual I have.

I'll talk to them in parts tomorrow and see if possibly the clip is listed as a "kit" and maybe the washer comes with it. But I've been looking at parts diagrams for 20 years.

Right now i'm leaning towards there isn't supposed to be one there.

If I remember correctly, when they showed me the book, the washer was depicted, the snap ring was depicted, and the washer was labeled "snap ring." The snap ring in the picture wasn't labeled.

I can fax you the picture that the parts program pulled up based on your VIN.

There is no flat washer or spring washer in the picture.

but saying that, there is an old quote that we use whenever we find an error, "If you cant trust your parts book, who can you trust?"

Of course that was back in the days that parts were in a paper book, even before microfiche.

There can always be an error in the book.
