1998 Kia Sephia Water pump

The waterpump is run by the timing belt. Here are the directions for all possible engines:

1.5L & 1.6L (VIN 5) Engines

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
Remove the drive belt.
Remove the timing belt.
NOTE
The power steering pump must be removed to access the water inlet pipe. Do not disconnect the pump fluid lines.

Remove the power steering pump and position aside.
Remove the water inlet pipe and gasket.
Remove the water bypass pipe and O-ring.
Remove the water pump bolts, pump and gasket.
Clean all gasket mating surfaces.


To install:

Install the water pump, using a new gasket and tighten the mounting bolts to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-26 Nm)
Install the water pump bypass pump, with a new O-ring.
Install the water inlet pipe, with a new O-ring.
Install the power steering pump.
Install the timing belt.
Install the drive belt.
Fill the engine coolant.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Start the engine and check for leaks.


1.6L (VIN 3) Engine

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
Drain the engine coolant.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
Remove or disconnect the following:


Drive belts Water pump pulley Timing belt Timing belt idler Alternator brace Water pump and gasket




To install:

Install or connect the following:


Water pump with a new gasket. Tighten the mounting bolts to 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm). Alternator brace. Tighten the bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm). Timing belt idler Timing belt Water pump pulley. Drive belts


Tighten the pulley bolts to 6-7 ft. lbs. (8-10 Nm).
Connect the negative battery cable.
Fill the cooling system to the correct level.
Start the engine and check for leaks.


1.8L Engine

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
Remove the timing belt, tensioner and idler pulleys.
Remove the water pump mounting bolts, then the pump.
Clean all gasket mating surfaces.


To install:

Install the water pump, using a new gasket and tighten the mounting bolts to 14-19 ft. lbs. (19-26 Nm)
Install the tensioner and idler pulleys
Install the timing belt
Fill the engine coolant.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Start the engine and check for leaks.


2.0L Engine

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain the engine coolant.
Remove the drive belts.
Remove the timing belt.
Remove the timing belt idler.
Remove the power steering pump and use a wire to secure the pump to the vehicle so that it is out of the way.
Remove the bolts and power steering pump bracket.
Remove the alternator.
Remove the 2 bolts (D) and alternator brace (A).
Remove the 3 bolts (C) and remove the water pump (B) and gasket.


To install:

Install the water pump.
Install the water pump (B) and a new gasket with the 3 bolts (C). Tighten the bolts to 8.5-10.5 ft. lbs. (11.5-14.5 Nm)
Install the alternator brace (A) with the 2 bolts (D). Tighten the bolts to 14.5-19.5 ft. lbs. (19.5-26.5 Nm)
Install the power steering pump bracket and bolts.
Install the alternator.
Install the power steering pump.
Install the timing belt idler.
Install the timing belt.
Install the water pump pulley.
Install the drive belts.
Tighten the water pump pulley bolts. Tighten the bolts to 5.5-7 ft. lbs. (7.5-10 Nm)
Fill with engine coolant.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Start engine and check for leaks.
Recheck engine coolant level.


2.4L & 2.7L Engines

Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain and recycle the engine coolant.
Disconnect the radiator outlet hose and coolant bypass hose from the water pump.
Remove the drive belt.
Remove the water pump pulley.
Remove the timing belt covers and timing belt tensioner.
Remove the water pump mounting bolts.
Remove the alternator brace.
Remove the water pump from the cylinder block.
Clean all gasket mating surfaces.

To install:

Install the water pump, using a new gasket and tighten the mounting bolts to 14-20 ft. lbs. (19-27 Nm) for 2.4L engines and 11-16 ft. lbs. (15-22 Nm) for 2.7L engines.
Install the timing belt tensioner and timing belt.
Install the timing belt covers.
Install the coolant pump pulley and drive belt.
Connect the radiator outlet hose and coolant bypass hose to the water pump.
Fill the engine coolant.
Connect the negative battery cable.
Start the engine and check for leaks.
