Crankshaft position sensor where is it located?

On Sat as I was driving my van just stopped running while at a stop light. I started right back up and drove about a block to the next light where it again died. However this time it took a few tries and minutes before it would restart and this time the engine light remained on. So I drove right to my local kia dealership and they ran a code check and it showed a code which was crank shaft sensor. I was told by the dealership that a van with 140,000 miles and over 9 years old can have this issue.

1. Is this true, is that kind of miles and age about when this sensor would begin to fail?
2. What does this sensor do and why does the engine shut off?

They told me that to repair it was a bit expensive due to it's location. They asked me if i have had my timing belt replaced. I told them I have an appointment with then in 2 weeks to get that belt changed. They suggested that if possible don't drive the van for the next two weeks and have all the work done then as it would save me money. They said to replace both timing belt and serpentine belt and the Crank Shaft sensor would run me about $700.

3. So does that seem like a fair price for all the labor and parts involved to do such work?

Sensors can fail any time and with the mileage on your vehicle, I would say it is a rather good lifespan.

The sensor is to inform the engine computer that the engine is turning and without it working correctly, the engine would not start.

The price is reasonable for the job and parts to be replaced.

Sensor is electronic so it can fail anytime. Sensor sends crankshaft position to computer for firing of sparkplugs so when it fails engine stops. And $700 is good price for T belt and sensor.

My car won't start they tell me I need a crank Shaft sensor. I have a 2003 Kia Sodona EX. Where is the crank Shaft sensor located and could you tell me how to replace it?

it pays 2.5 hours and is located under the timing cover down by the harmonic balancer. if you have never done this, i do not recommend trying it as you may get in over your head real quick. very labor intensive job. better left to an experienced shop.

I just had mine replaced and you need to have a professional do it. Also if you have not had your timing belt replaced lately go ahead and have that done as it's all in the same area, you are going to just pay a bit more for the belts.

Where is the crank shaft censor located. How difficult is it to replace? it costs around $80.00 but how much to install? My van keeps shutting off while driving. it won't turn back on for a good time (less than 1 hour)

It is located near the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine. It bolts in place. It should take aprox 30 minutes of labor to install.

replaced the crankshaft position sensor.nnow the engine runs hot by about 500 to 1000 rpm and wont shift when driving.sounds rough.is there an adjustment for the sensor or is there something else im missing?

So you have a high idle by 500-1000 rpms?ALso did you have a code is that why you replaced the sensor?If you had a code what was the number?Any current codes now?

car died at a light.code read as po337-replace crankshaft sensor.replaced sensor and reset check engine light.now there are no codes.main problem now is that it wont shift out of first gear.

What is the make and model of the scan tool your using to read codes?Also does the car have a lack of power?

seems to run a little hot at idle.usually runs at 1100.now runs at about 2000.drives ok til about the time it should shift then either wont shift or seems to shift and looses power.will not shift into drive at all.

A lot of the cheap generic scan tools sometimes won't read all the transmission codes.I have Mitchell on demand online repair info and there isn't much detail on the kias.For diagnoses or repairs so the car drove and shifted normal before you changed the crank sensor?Also you said the car won't shift at all into drive so it will physically shift into drive but won't move when you hit the gas?Or just stays in first and won't shift?

I have a code p0337 crankshaft sensor how do you replace?

with only 39k miles, i would venture to assume it may be covered under factory warranty. but if not, it's about a 3 hour job. remove the serpentine belt, balancer pulley, and necessary accesories, remove the timing cover, the crank sensor is just above the crank gear for the timing belt. always wise to replace the belt while you're in there if there's any signs of abnormal wear. if not, mark directional rotation & set timing marks & reinstall exactly as removed, if necessary to remove belt for sensor replacement. some vehicles, you can snake the sensor out without having to remove the timing belt. best of luck. :)

shifter physically goes into drive.car starts out fine then wont shift past first gear.

If it didn't do it before changing the crank sensor sounds like something went really wrong.Does it havea lack of power like the engine is bogging down?

I need to knw approximately how long does it take for a mechanic shop to install a crankshaft position sensor?

The crank shaft position sensor is located behind the front engine cover so there is a bit of work to get to it, Mitchell 1 data base allows 3 hrs, to do the job but I feel that around 2 may be closer to the mark, so to stay safe anywhere between 2-3 should be ample time.

I recently replaced the crankshaft position sensor in my '02 Kia Sedona. No it will no idle correctly. What should I check next.

Check and test the idle air control valve/motor

Twice the van quit running on me got OBD code and now a friend who I borrowed van from says it happened cause the van ran out of gas. would it cause the crank shaft sensor 2 break?

Of course not. You did not list the fault code number or what is wrong with the crankshaft position sensor, but those often fail by becoming heat-sensitive, then they work again after they cool down for about an hour. They are a real common cause of intermittent stalling.

Running out of gas is a common occurrence. That can cause a fuel pump to overheat and fail, but it does not affect other parts.
