2004 Kia Optima Check Engine Light On

My check engine light came on the other day. I looked in my owners manual and it says that it is emissions. With emissions that is pretty broad.

I am not a mechanic and I'm wanting to get some advice as to what the problems could be, and suggestions of pricing so I don't get "took" when the mechanic sees me coming.
