key will not turn in the ignition to on or start position?

So, my key will not turn in the ignition to on or start position unless I jiggle the shifter and sometimes it takes quite some time. so, I started to put my car in neutral and the car off so that I could restart the vehicle because if I put it back into Park turn it off and take the key out I end up having to go to the whole process again and trying to get it to turn over I've been stuck now for a day haven't been able to get it to turn on.
