Key fob programming instructions needed

Hi,

However, according to my manual, to program a fob requires a scan tool that can communicate with the vehicle's remote keyless entry system (RKE). Here are the directions I have:

TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING
Each transmitter is coded to prevent another transmitter from activating the RKE functions on another Saturn, as long as that particular transmitter has not been specifically programmed to that Saturn.

A transmitter can be programmed to as many different Saturn's as a customer owns, as long as they have the power door lock option. Each Saturn can be programmed with up to four transmitters.

To program transmitters use the Tech 2 BCM special functions, Program Key Fobs.

To program customer options refer to "RKE Customer Programmable Content Theft Programming".

As Joe related the remote for that car must be programmed using a scan tool. That is common with many vehicles as a way to prevent theft. There are shops other than the dealer who can program them in as well as locksmiths, the locksmiths are usually the lower cost option though.

Joe, that link didn't help me. I'm needing a key fob programmed without going to a locksmith or dealer.

It isn't possible to program that vehicle to use a remote that has never been initialized to it without a scan tool and security access. That means a shop with the correct tools or a dealer or locksmith. No DIY method on that Saturn.

I'm sorry that didn't help. Steve is correct. You need security access initialized. I wish I had a better answer and less expensive one for you, but unfortunately I don't.

what diagnostic scanners programs a key fob for my vehicle that doesn't cost to much ?

The only lower cost unit that does any key or fobs that I'm aware of is the Launch Diagun V and it run's about $700.00+ for the basic unit and I'm not sure it would work on a Saturn as it's somewhat hit or miss on that function based on what the OEM sets up in the system. Many require a PIN number that you cannot get without a dealer access code that allows the system to accept the new device into the system, again to prevent it being easy to steal vehicles.

That's one of the problems. None of the lower priced units do anything with the security systems. I have 2 scan tools that will program just about any keys or fobs, one was $2,400.00 and the other was closer to $7,000.00 plus both require a subscription to a security service to work. That is why I usually say that a locksmith or smaller shop with the tools is a lot cheaper. Usually a dealer is good as well but 99% of the time you need an appointment and the time to drop it off, with a locksmith you can usually drive in and get it done in a half hour. Unless you run a shop or a mobile diagnostics outfit it isn't something for a DIYer to get into these days.
