2008 Jeep Wrangler loose clutch

Well, with that much play in the pedal alng with the smell in 4 low?? I would go back to the dealer. Just explain to them what has been going on and since they worked on it last and it has not been 100% and slowly getting worse hopefully they will help you. The problem sounds like the slave cyl system has some air in it causing the play and possibly also causing the throw out bearing to ride against the pressure plate?? They should at least help you with the diagnosis. Let me know what comes of this please, and thanks Curt

I've tried to send an instant message to you curt but it won't allow me to for some reason so I'm hoping that you'll get this,
i took it to the dealership and it was in fact the slave cylinder, something came apart and had allowed all of the fluid to leak out of it and that was what was causing the problem with the clutch, (it was fixed under warranty and apparently it is a problem that a lot of the new 2008/2009 wranglers are having)

the second question i had was about the 4lo giving off a burning smell when i used it.
i have already once before had the jeep in about it and both times now they have kinda just blown it off and given no good solid answer other that its me pushing it to hard or going to fast once in 4lo,

but like I said in the initial question, I've been driving stick vehicles for many years and am an avid off road enthusiast and i know full well how to drive in 4lo,
so i think something is wrong and they are just neglecting to look deep enough into the issue.

do you think that i should take it to another mechanic (other than the dealership) and try to get some advice.

Well i was glad to hear you got the one problem fixed. I cant really think of a better answer for the 4lo problem. I would think if it was a problem with the throw out bearing or pressure plate then it would show up all the time. In four low you are gearing down so low that it would cause more of a chance that the clutch would slip but i have not ran into this problem in our shop, and jeeps are 75% of what i work on. It could not hurt to take it to another mech to get his opinion i just hate to see you out of pocket. Try a trusted tranny shop and see what they tell you. Just make sure you continue to work with the dealership and they know what you are doing and why. Interestead to hear from you on what this problem is. I would of thought the clutch and plate would be seated after so many miles and no burning smell???? Keep me informed please. Curt

I know this is an old post, but I have a 2008 Wrangler I purchased new in late 07. At about 20k miles the dealer had to replace the fly wheel, after that the clutch started acting funny. It made a rattle when coasting with the clutch in and occasionally the clutch would not disengage when the pedal was pressed. The dealer said it was probably the slave cylinder but did not replace it. When it got worse I took it back and they replaced the entire clutch assembly to include the cylinders. A day later, the clutch still would not disengage so I took it back. They said the clutch was burned out and replaced it again. A day after picking it up, it still would not disengage the clutch. The dealer is blaming the part supplier. Since the first replacement clutch was installed the clutch pedal does not seem to function until the very end of the stroke when almost to the floor and will engage the drive when only very little is let up from the floor.
