I shorted out my alternator by accidently leaving a wrench in the engine. It burned a hole in the regulator casing, but I had a load put on the alternator and tested fine. the battery was weak though, so I had it recharged. But the check gauge light still comes on after 5 minutes of driving. This didn't happen pre - accidentental short.

Any advice?

Retrieve the code. It could be simply that the battery was disconnected within so many key on, key off cycles but you might have a problem with the regulator.

Autozone should read the code for you. Please give me the code- not their version of what it means.

I broke down today hauling a trailer.

Last night I put in a new battery, ran fine, then today when hauling a trailer, I broke down. The new battery was shot. Put in a new alternator and another new battery. Ran fine home, but I still have an engine light on and a check gauge light on.

Autozone ran diadnostics and they came up with the tps. Throttle position sensor. This was before I broke down today.

I don;t knowm what is going on now. Will try it tomorrow. Any advice?

If you have a problem with the Throttle Position Sensor it could cause the car to missfire at speed. How did it die when you would breakdown? Sputter and stall or shut off? The TPS is located on the Throttle Body (black cylinder). It can be removed and cleaned; however, double check this is what is wrong before you replace it.

Does it missfire at over 30mph or backfire during deceleration? Unplug the sensor and see if you notice a difference; however, most likely that is your problem.

I took it to a shop and they found a fusable link blown which explains the alternator problem. I told them about the low rpm and he blew out the tps and that seemed to work also thus far. No moregauge lights!

Thanks for your help. Your insight helped.
