2002 Jeep Wrangler Engine Stall and gas guage

Some times I would start my car and the gas gauge will not move and the fuel light would turn on. I would turn off the engine then back on and the gauge would move to where it should be and the light would go off. This has been happening randomly for the past 6 months but now more often. Just this past weekend I was driving, at highway speeds, and the car went completely dead. Everything turned off. I pressed the clutch and started the car right back up. 2 min later it happened again but it started right back up and stayed on until I got to where I was going. While driving I watched the gas gauge go from half full to empty and the light went on. The next day the engine died and the gas gauge incident happened again.

Unplug the crank sensor wire which is located on the driver side rear of engine and see if your gauges work. If they do then the crank sensor is shorted out. If that does not work try unplugging the cam sensor which is located at the distributor, sometimes they short out also. Next unplug the o2 sensors and check your gauges for operation. These sensors all share the same voltage source as your gauges and if one of them shorts out it will take away the current from your gauges. Do this with all of your sensors one at a time until you find the one causing your problem. The most common sensors to go bad is the crank sensor and the cam sensor but any of the other ones could short out.
