The Auto Transmission and the 4W drive selector have become disengaged. The engine starts, the auto trans will go to any of the gears but it will not engage, and the 4W drive selector is now very loose and will not engage also. This happened when parking and going back and forth to straighten out the Jeep.
What happened? Is there some way to re-engage the transmission?

Lets check for codes as a first step...turn the key from off to on three times, on the fourth time leave it in the on position, any codes will display in the odometer window, write them down and post! Do not start the Jeep while doing this!

It looks like the link from the front fell out of the lever in the back. The link has a nut on the pole with a pin with a hole in on the end. Does that go through the grommet on the lever?

Does that need to be secured , if so with what?

Is there way to tell if it is broke or bent and needs to be replaced?

Once this is secured , willl both the transmission and the 4 wheel drive lever be working?

Thanks for your help.

Wrangler 1. With transmission in Park and engine off, raise vehicle on hoist. Using screwdriver, unlock gearshift cable by releasing cable adjuster clamp. See Fig. 6 . Remove cable from mounting bracket. Slide cable eyelet off transmission shift lever. 2. Move shift lever on transmission rearward until fully seated into Park detent. Verify engagement of park lock by attempting to rotate drive shaft. Park lock is engaged if drive shaft cannot be rotated. Slide cable eyelet onto transmission shift lever. 3. Snap gearshift cable into cable mounting bracket. Press down on cable adjuster clamp to lock cable. Lower vehicle and verify engine starting. Engine should start only with gearshift lever in Park or Neutral. Fig. 6: Adjusting Gearshift Cable (Wrangler) Courtesy of DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORP.
