Imma CJ guy, You left a lot for the imagination, I do not know your rig real well....I've seen this performed on CJs (rather performed incorrectly)
If you removed the shifter assembly, Did you have the Shifter in NEUTRAL when you reinstalled it......AND EVEN AS IMPORTANT!....Did you have the SYNCHRONIZER SLEEVES, inside the tranny, in the NEUTRAL POSITIONS as well?
I do not know your rig, very well,..................... but "LET'S SAY", your shifter, will not slide back in, unless you have it in "2ND GEAR" (or any other, for example)....The Synchronizer sleeves in the tranny must correspond also.......the shift forks must slide into the grooves, as you lower it into place...... Sometimes a mirror can aid you in insuring everything is falling into place, as you lower the shifter into place.
Like I said, CJ Guy.....Do not know your rig well.
