The steering recently went out on my 95 wrangler (luckily on a farm and not on the highway). The wheel turns freely, literally there is no resistance, but the wheels won't respond. I'm thinking, because of all the play in the wheel, that something has simply come detatched or broken off. It's driven primarily on rough, dirt farm roads and gravel. Seems like it might be a quick fix, as simply as reconnecting something or replacing a minor part in the steering column. Thanks in advance for your advice.

make sure the steering shaft is attached at the steering gear. Also, check the pitman arm (on the other end of the steering box) to see if it is tight.

Let me know what you find. My guess is one of them is broken or disconnected.

Let me know. It has to be one or the other if there is no tension on the steering wheel.
