Jeep will not fire, after replaceing fuel line to carb. and running the engine I turned it off, put up my tools, went to move the jeep, nothing. There's no current anywhere, lights, dash, radio and clock, nothing. I checked the battery, new solenoid switch and new starter switch, still nothing. I have checked the fuses and they are OK. Is there someway to check the starter relay, the starter switch and coil, just wondering where to start?

When you turn the key to the on position without cranking the engine over can you hear the fuel pump run in the tank for 5 seconds?

Please run down this guide and report back. The Medic

Have replaced coil, have voltage to positive on coil, have replaced pick up assembly, have fan working, will crank, will NOT start with crossover battery to coil = all told, NO FIRE to distributor.

Could this be a plug wire, bad grounding to coil, or ignition switch problem??? or something completely different?

This year Jeep does not have sensors.

Since my original post, I did check the wire from the center of the coil to the distributor and nothing new happened. There is voltage (12volts)(BUT 0 amps). into the coil and zip coming out Where does the positive coil wire lead to... wiring harness? or straight to switch???

The dark green wire that went from the coil's negative to the electronic carriage unit was the answer - however, I do not know if it just reset and worked after pulled it out and reinserted it OR if it just needed cleaned up for a better connection.

Either way, I have fire!

That schematic was the best, as were you for offering it! Thank you!

What book did that schematic come from? I'd like to buy that one.

For my first use of this site, I'd say the help here was great and worthy of the requested donation!

ok, no more throwing parts at it.

do you have power to the positive side of the coil?? if you do, then look for a pulsating test light on the negative side while cranking to see if the coil is being commanded to fire.

if there is no power, you may have a bad ignition switch

Engine Performance problem
1987 Jeep Wrangler 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 100k+ miles

Replaced Cap, Rotor, Wires, Coil, Carb, Control Module (Twice), ignition switch (a few years back). Alternator, Starter.

Start it cold..runs fine. Drive where you want to. Shut it down...go into say a store, shop, come back out. Won't start. Turns over, won't start. Wait an hour. Turns over and starts like nothing happened.

This is a carburated system. Changed: Cap, Rotor, Plugs, Wires, Carb, coil, alternator, starter, battery, control module (twice). Ignition switch, O2 Sensor. Had someone tell me that maybe the pickup coil is going bad or has gone bad.

My 1987 Jeep Wragler stopped runnig one day and acted like it was out of gas. I added gas but no luck. a machanic told me it was the fuel pump but I replaced it and it still will not start. I'm moving to the fuel filter. I removed it tonight and it is old but not cloged. What else could it be? It is a 4 clynder with fuel injection. The air filter is good. I have pored gas right in to the carborator and it has turned over whe I do. So I'm pretty sure its the fuel.

How can I check verify that fuel is at my injectors.

Get a helper while engine is being crank over -listen to the injector/s with a long screwwdiver, is it clicking?

You can also do this remove 1 or 2 plugs if its wet than its getting fuel-and the problem is coming from the ignition system. No spark!!

You may have to do a fuel pressure test. Have you changed the fuel filter lately? also, It is always good to do that during a tune up. The vehicle is a bit older, so you may have to go through and check some other systems in this situation. Did you move the distributor at all during your tune up, possibly putting the ignition timing off? There is a Vacuum Advance Unit on the distributor that controls ignition timing also. the running bad condition could be a few things, so we will have to narrow it down a little at first. Let us know what you find and we will keep checking this thing out so you can get it back on the road.

Hello Scott,

Here is a helpful link to an article from this site explaining the process of checking the fuel pressure yourself. If you decide you would like do this yourself you can purchase a fuel pressure gauge online from sites like Amazon.com.

Thank you for visiting 2CarPros.com.

Kindest regards,

Do you have the means to check for spark also, making sure all your wires are on tight and not connections to the coil or ignition module are loose.

98 Jeep Wrangler, odo 79,000
Manual, 4.0
I drained the fuel tank out of fear someone had put something in the tank because we saw someone in the middle of the night out by it. This is a new car for us so I immediately drained the tank just in case. Jeep ran perfect before this. I jumped relay with a wire to drain the tank. Luckily nothing was in the fuel. I reconnected the relay put a quarter of a tank of new fuel in just in case & now it will not start & service engine light is on. I have tried another relay per a mech at the dodge dealership to check to see if the fuel would pump it does not. If I reconnect just the jumper wire it pumps fuel. But with relay in it does not. Please help.

Hello !!

Have you check the fuses?

How do you "jump" the relay to start the pump?

Did you "touch" the coil connectors on the relay base?

could be a bad efi fuse.. or a powertrain control Module fuse..

Check those and let us know on your findings!

good luck!

I have an 89 Jeep Wrangler, 2.5L 4cyl with 205,000 miles. It is in great shape! However, it sat in storage for 1 year unused. I had to jump start it to get it started so I could remove it from storage. It started fine and ran for about 10 minutes and died. I have not been able to start it since. The engine rotates normally, but will not start. I replaced the battery, oil/filter, spark plugs/wires, distributor cap/rotor, drained as much of the old fuel as possible and replaced it with new. None of that seemed to change the symptoms. I used starting fluid to try to get it to start and it did not work either. The engine just keeps rotating, but it never starts! Please help!

I had a similar issue with my 1996 cherokee last year. The vehicle ran great for months and then just wouldn't start one day.

I had to replace the BRAIN $$$ (computer) and have had no problems with starting the vehicle since. Hope this helps...
