I installed a TBI kit on My '89 YJ from Howell. Ever since it has been overheating. The problem is the gauge doesnt register its overheating. I checked the oil and discovered my paint on my valve cover is bubbling. so i pulled the plugs which had blistered insulators, Why wouldn't the gauge register it running hot? I replaced the waterpump, thermostat, temp sensor and sending unit. I know its running lean. which would explain the overheating, but not the gauge not working. could i bypass the gauge with a temporary sensor to get an accurate temp reading? if so where can i find one?

not familiar personally with the TBI kit you referenced - but... your symptoms do sound like it's more of a gauge not functioning correctly than anything else. The reason the overheating is happening in the first place would be a stronger concern if I was in your shoes but ultimately you need to get it working correctly.

I would in your shoes, try to determine the cause of the overheat by contacting the supplier of your kit. I would then try to find an aftermarket temperature gauge and install one temporarily to see if it registers a similar temp range as your original one. That should help to clarify if the gauge is also in need of replacement.

good luck!
