1993 Jeep Wagoneer engine surges

engine surges while driving. More noticable in the 10-15 mph range but also there at higher speeds. Fuel economy has dropped dramatically. Still has power under acceleration.

Do you have a check engine light and when was the last major tune-up?

Check the fuel pressure/throttle position and the MAP sensors.

No check engine light. As far as the last tune up i'm not sure. Not my jeep and i'm trying to help a friend. He is very good with engines and keeps his vehicles in top shape. We've discussed some of the possible problems , but he was hoping someone that may have experienced this problem might know where to look before spending extra money on sensors. Thanks for the info. I will let him know whats been discussed so far.
