I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L V8 with a NP249 Transfer Case and I am pretty sure that my Transfer Case is shot.

I am putting my front driveshaft back in today but my question is, if my transfer case is shot will I have any 4wd cabablilites or will it not work at all ?

Hi there,

This will depend on what the actual problem is, if it is a bearing noise or a noise in the drive line you will still have 4X4 but further damage will be done when loaded up, if it is a selection problem, then no 4X4, if it is a mechanical failure no 4X4 and possibly no drive at all depending on what as failed.

I still have rear wheel drive right now. I think the viscous coupler is messed up.

Hi there,

There is no use second guessing this problem, you will have to dismantle the transfer and investigate this throughly, driving it any further may only compound the problem you have , i strongly recommend that you don't drive it until this is investigated.
