We replaced the transmission about two years ago. I noticed today, my transmission fluid looks similar to oil (gray-ish brown) instead of red. Now the car constantly shuts down when it is put into reverse. Any suggestions ? Thank you !

dont know what you mean by shuts down but it sounds like its burning up again. fluid is suposed to be changed every 25,000 miles.

As I put it into reverse ...the car starts to shutter ...then stalls. If I feather the gas pedal (Sort of like I'm driving a clutch), I can get it to back up ...but I must go 20 or 30 mph to do so. NOTE: This only happens once the car is rather warmered up. Drives like a dream when cold. Not bad out here in the country ...but rather a pain if I go into NYC and try to back up into a parking space. What do you mean it might be "burning up?" The first transmission (Original) lasted for 170,000 miles ....now I'm at about 181,000 ....... Thanks again !

when you said how the trans fluid looks. that means its been overheated and/or the clutches inside the trans are failing. i was once told buy a chrysler technition that 150,000 is the life of a trans.

The previous trans lasted 170,000 ....so I guess that's not too bad. But, this one only has about 10,000 on it. If I change the fluid in the transmission, should this help with the overheating ...or .... would you guess it's a more severe problem? What do you mean: Clutches inside might be failing? Thanx again!

did you flush the trans lines, and cooloer and install a new tourqe converter when the trans was replaced? or has it run low on fluid since you changed the trans.

with only 10,000 miles i would definatly change filter and fluid, and if it has a waranty i would take it to them and let them check it out. also make sure the trans lines are on the correct way.

the automatic trans has clutch packs that drive the transmission.on a standard you have 1 clutch in the automatic you have up to 3 or 4 sets of clutches.

Thank you very much ! ! ! We've made note of all your suggestions and information. First thing tomorrow, we will check into everything you've mentioned. I'm almost certain the warranty is up ......So, I'm hoping changing the fluid and filter will do the trick ? ? ? ? ?
Once again.... a sincere thanks for all your help ! ~Frank~
