Engine oil type?

Okay, what is the deal with 5W20 weight oil? I really have always preferred at least 10W30. I got a new 2008 Jeep Liberty, 3.7 L engine, looks identical to the 2002 version as far as spec.

I recognize the 10W30 offer a little viscosity of oil, but isn't that a trade off for min. of oil related oil?

What happens if you go with 5W30 instead of 5W20? That 20 value with the high temperatures of modern engines seems to be asking for trouble.

Hello, I'm Danny.

As funny as this may sound but I ran into this oil viscosity trouble with a similar car I just acquired. Check engine light came on due to variable valve timing. Replaced switch to no avail. Come to find out I ended up doing an oil change with the correct 5W-20 oil the car requires and it solved the problem. It had 10W-30 the former owner had put in. The solenoids that are used to supply oil to the variable valve timing apparently getting clogged with heavier weight-viscosity oils. Lesson learned-stick with the oil the vehicle requires.

ENGINE OIL .................... API CERTIFIED SAE 5W-20

Engine Oil, meeting the requirements of DaimlerChrysler Material Standard MS-6395.
