1997 Jeep Laredo Rear end??

I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee Laredo and it started to make a whinning/howling noise in the rear. So i checked fluid and it was low. What could be wrong??? Is it an easy/cheap fix to do yourself????

Are there any leaks? Did you check the axle seals? Is the differential cover leaking? Did you refill the differential?
