My 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is not running now. My exhaust is split ( probably from a faulty mechanic who took off my bad catalytic converter) so I know it will need exhaust work possible a replacement. Before it backfired and cut out on me, it would stall at an idle, barely drive without hesitation or stalling. I thought maybe it was the fuel pump, I have had other things worked on ex. crank sensor etc. Will my Jeep run if my exhaust is replaced or fixed or will I need a fuel pump as well?? If that is the case wont that be more than the car is worth? I bought it at $2500 and a few months later it started acting up with the hesitating and stalling. What do you suggest. I know I should take it to another mechanic and see what he says now that my exhaust is pretty messed up but if I take it to a mechanic I want to either fix it right then and ther and knwo what I am up against.

Has the catylatic converter been removed? As far as the exhaust, it shouldn't cause the engine not to run unless the converter was completely plugged. Has the check engine light come on? Also, here are the directions for checking fuel pump pressure. You will need a gauge, but most parts stores will lend or rent one to you. CHeck the pressure and let me know what you find.
