1994 Jeep Laredo Car only shifts sometimes

I just bought this jeep with 115k miles on it with no motor issues. only problem is it will only switch into 2nd if i take it really slow to get there and i haven't been able to switch in 3rd but a few times. sometimes it just winds out the rpms and makes a hard shift, sometimes it just doesn't shift, and sometimes it's smooth sailin'. I have been told a few different things but still am not sure. Should i just replace the whole transmission, or could my issue be something smaller than that?

It sounds as if your transmission itself may be ok or it would slip between gears and not just hold onto them. Things to check are the filter being plugged up, make sure fluid level are at the correct levels while checking them with proper procedures, Also, take it to a reputable Transmission shop to get the governor pressure regulator checked out as they do go bad from time to time and it will affect your shifting because it monitors the pressure which your transmission needs to shift with.
