I have an oil gage that is either High or low, my wife yesterday was driving to the store and the oil pressure dropped to low and check gages light came on. The jeep ran fine until this happened but now while it still starts and runs is making horrible noises ticking and whinning and the oil pressure remains at low. Also notice smoke from the rear of the engine while the hood is lifted... is my engine toast? I want to add that while the engine oil was slightly low it was not out of oil, i did add oil to bring it up to normal.

Thanks, prior to reading this I started the jeep so I could turn the wheels and the pressure gage went back to normal.... The ticking is still there and maybe even a knock also but it does sound better than it did yesterday. Should I bother with changing the oil and filter and use some sort of flush or cleaning product or would you just recommend it goes to the shop?

Don't know if engine is toast? I wouldn't even start it up. Check the oil pump and pickup.
