I did find a generic wiring diagram, not worth much, I didn't notice any wiring colors. I'd want to find the temp sending unit on the engine block, start there. #8 in the diagram is the temp sender.

See my profile, and other CJ 5/7 posts.

On 258---6.......Temp gauge sending unit is located either on the FRONT OF THE HEAD----OR beside the valve cover DRIVERS SIDE, ON TOP OF THE HEAD...Closest to the firewall

On 1976 up, Wire is purple and may have a stripe (find it by sender, regardless)

If you turn your key ON, Remove the wire from the sender----then GROUND it using a jumper wire, paperclip, nail, ETC!------YOUR GAUGE WILL PEG OUT, if all is good ( you then know its a BAD SENDER, in the head) You have just fooled the gauge into sensing MEGA Overheat.

On 1976 up, the purple wire, somehow makes it inside and IS PURPLE on the sender side of the gauge. (if your color is different--it may be same color on back of the speedometer[temp gauge] )

What are we doing exactly, do we have a rats nest, trying to figure it out?.....Or is all good except for this?

If you will describe the YOUR speedo and gauges (use mirror to describe the backside), I have a Speedo---out, in stoage (for '76 up), can send pics of wire locations---and how to test the gauges. IF OURS ARE ALIKE ENOUGH.

Have many Jeep manuals.

OK Jeep Guy, Need to know what engine you have.

Do you have a manual? I can suggest certain one.

Wiring Diagrams '75 on back are really crappy.

I have owned 6 CJ 5s---'76-'83....And 1 1946 WILLYS

Yours falls in between---mostly like my '46....But some like My present '77

Do you have any sort of guide with your harness?

I have always done my restorations from scratch (2)

I can imagine the rats nest you started with!

I will send you a pic of my '77 Speedometer (soon), the backside---Tell me if yours is the same, or at least similar.

Do you have the engine end of the Oil pressure and Temperature sender Wires IDENTIFIED or in place?
