I own a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 6 cylinder, 4.0 liter. I notice a "whining" sound coming from the rear-end when I accelerated; seems to decrease in pitch when decelerating, but is constant.
Initially I thought it was just road noise, but too "whiny' for that and increases in pitch as I accelerate. Any ideas what the problem might be, and approximate cost to repair?

Also hear what sounds like exhaust noise coming from left side of engine compartment. Could the exhaust manifold be leaking, and if so is there a gasket that can be replaced, or would I need to replace manifold itself? Any extimate on cost to repair this would be greatly appreciated.

Rear end whine most likley the pinion bearing. Or backlash adjustment. Exuast should be narrowed down to the pipes or the manifold.
