Radiator Fan Control Relay?

Engine Cooling problem 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 940000 miles

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I need to replace the fan control relay. My problem is that I can not find mine, it is not where the chilton book says it is.
It is not located under the passenger head light, I have the entire front end apart and there is no relay located there. There are holes in the sheet metal where it should be, but it is not there. Is there another hiding place for this relay?

Notice the radiator fan relay control just above the low and high speed fan relays, my fan runs on high from engine start thus not allowing engine to come up to operating temperature. And my MIL is on indicating P01489 and P01490, both of which are talking of this PWM relay. I am sorry for the long question but I have a new control relay that was purchased using my 4.0L engine size.

If its a 4.0L engine its located in the power distribution box-see below 2-fan speed relay involved.

Here is the wiring diagram and relay location (below) along with some easy guides to help you with the testing.

and in case the motor is bad which happens alot

Here is the fan control module (below)

It will show up on the cooling fan EWD as I've provided.

P1489. High Speed Fan Control Relay

P1490. Low Speed Fan Relay Circuit

Above these 2 relays is a hydraulic cooling fan module it is not a relay and only applies to 4.7L engine.

The coolant temperature sensor feeds the computer the engine temperature. The computer decides whether only one fan is needed or 2 fans depending on engine temperature and AC load-Have your computer tested its jobs is to energize the appropriate relay as needed.

Hi for the person that was looking to find the radiator fan control rely, you have to remove the front bumper cover to find it. and it is located under the passenger headlight after you remove the bumper cover.... I had the same issue trying to find it.

Hello, I take it since your mechanic cannot find the relay it is a Grand Cherokee not a Cherokee. The relay is located Behind Bumper Facia, Below Right Headlight...

The relay on a Cherokee is located in the Power Distribution Box under the hood

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 6 cyl 85M miles. The car overheated the other day and threw a P1491 code causing the Check Engine light to come on. I was in heavy stop & go traffic. After letting the car cool down for 45 mins I proceeded to destination and the temp stayed normal, 210 degrees. I checked all cooling systems and all seems to work. The electric fan comes on when the AC is switched on and or when the engine reaches temp. The electric fan doesn't turn as agressively as I have experienced in other cars though. Normally they torque right up to speed, this one slowly gets there but doesn't move the air I thought it would. The fan blade moves freely with no binding so it's not seized up any. Could the fan be bad or maybe the relay can't handle the currrent the fan wants to draw> Anyone have any ideas????

Thanks

I think your vehicle has two relays one for slow fan speed and one for high speed. It also could be a clogged radiator. If you haven't changed the coolant from the factory, that is the problem as the OEM coolant dies after about 40K miles and turns to juck in the radiator.

I didn't realize there were two speeds to the fan. I unplugged the fan and ran a full 13 volts to it and it ran the same as it did when plugged in. I just wasn't happy with the fan speed and the amount of air it moved.
Thanks

Your probable causes here could be the fan motor itself, fan relay, coolant temperature sensor or the engine temperature gauge switch and computer controlled of the fan relay-

Hello,

Here is the cooling fan wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works. There is no switch that runs it just the PCM and a relay with a fuse. Here is the relay location and a guide to test the relay and power.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-an-electrical-relay-and-wiring-control-circuit

and

Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find.

the fan relay in the 2001 cherokee is in the relay box which is located in the engine compartment on the pass side of the motor in a long black plastic box. On mine it is right next to my coolant overflow bottle. The relays for many parts are located there and the relays are labeled on the top of the box which comes off the bottom part. Many of the relays are interchangeable so you can remove the fan relay and try another 5 prong relay to see if that is your problem.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I have a 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0 straight 6 cyl engine. It has 17,000 miles on it and has been running fine. I took it to the car wash today it has been 28 degrees here in NJ. After I returned home I noticed the electric radiator fan was still running even after I shut the enging off. I went outside a while after and it was still running. I took the care around the block to see if it was just a fluke thing but the fan stayed running after I shut the engine off and did not stop. As not to run my battery down, I open the fuse and relay distribution box in the engine compartment and removed the square green 40 amp fuse or relay that stopped the fan. I put the fuse back in and the fan came back on. I will leave it out until tomorrow morning when I leave for work. I have a 35 minute ride to work and I will see what the fan is doing when I get there and shut the engine off. It was fine until I got the car washed today at our local car wash. Have you run across this before?
Thanks,
Harry

Hey Harry,
Sure have! there is a solid state relay behind the right headlight assembly,( a real @#%@% to change too!) There is an issue with these failing either not allowing the fan to work or turning the fan on continuously. Let us know!

Hi Chris, Thank you for the information, I purchased the fan relay today. You said the right side head light, did you mean facing the hood or inside the car. Is it passanger side head light? I see my relay came with screws and rivets depending on when my Jeep was made. My Jeep was made Oct.2002.
let me know
Thanks,
Harry

My radiator fan won't stop running when I turn the ignition off, killing the battery. Is this a belt issue? I removed the battery cables, can I drive it to a shop or will it overheat? 95 Cherokee.

SISSY LIZ,

Forget the shop.......at least for now

Hook your battery back up and take that "Puppy" to Advance Auto or Autozone...........or another popular auto store.

Sound like a relay is stuck or burned

Merry Christmas!
