My oil pressure guage is reading fine. The car is at the mechanics, and he is struggling to find the cause. He said the engine is fine. What could the cause be? This is frustrating!

if your oil pressure reading is high, it doesnt necessarily mean there is something wrong with your car, your sending unit could be faulty This guide can help us fix it

On start up, pressure gauge climbs to 3/4 of gauge. While driving, it goes to the max gauge reading. After a while it drops off the high end. Oil is at the proper levels. Oil / filter has been changed every 3,500 miles. Where do I begin??

I would hook up a mechanical gague to see what pressure is, to verefy car gague. If the truck gague is off probably sending unit. If it is accurate then relief valve in oil pump is not operating.

My oil pressure is always high. Whenever i drive in idle the oil pressure is normal but whenever i step on the gas the oil pressure goes high. i was wondering if anything is wrong.

Check your fuel pressure switch, it may be faulty and giving your computer incorrect data.

The other possible problem is that the oil pressure relief valve has clogged and is making the pressure go higher, but i think you would have had some more signficant problems if this was the case.

I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo 6-cyl 4wd with 89000 miles on it. The oil pressure has been 40 - 60 for the life of the vehicle, and all of a sudden it runs at higher pressure. It idles 40 - 50, and goes as high as 75 at higher speeds. I have recently had to replace the head gasket, but still have this issue.

44.00 at Napa.

20 minutes to get the stupid red pin plastic piece out securing the wiring to the unit. (it pulls from the bottom).

2 minutes to remove and replace.

Problem solved.

Nothing, your oil pump is driven by the speed of the engine, as long as you are not completely losing pressure and are not lining out the pressure on the other end you are fine.

For example, my Audi S4 runs all the way to 5 bar, or 73 psi, when I floor the throttle, though it idles around 1.5 bar, or 22 psi. As a rule of thumb all you need is about 10 psi of pressure for every 1,000 rpm.

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Limited with the 4.0 Strait Six and everytime i start my car the engine oil Pressure shoots strait to 80, when i first bought the car it never did that until i changed the oil, i checked the amount i put in the engine and it was right bellow the safe line on the oil dip stick, im wondering what some it could be caused by? Ive been told it could be an oil pressure sending unit or a plugged oil pump, id just like to know if i should stop driving the car or not because i wouldnt want any more damage to be caused to the engine because i cant afford to fix it right now, thanks for reading and hopefully i can get this cleared up sometime when i find out whats wrong with the oil pressure.

Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge,if normal replace the oil pressure switch. If abnormal could mean oil pump in your case the oil pressure relief valve is stuck closed

I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 96,000 miles on it. About 2 weeks ago, I began smelling a faint oil smell every now and then. Today, I noticed that my oil pressure gauge is maxed out when I am driving. It fluctuates slightly when the engine is idling. The temperature guage is reading around the 200-210 range. I checked the oil and it looks fine; good color and proper level. The Jeep is about 1000 miles from it's next oil change. I haven't seen any puddles on the floor of my garage. I purchased the Jeep in November and this is my first one so I am not aware of any quirks that they may have. My dealer's warranty just ran out 1000 miles ago, so I am on my own. Thanks for any help that you could provide!

Check the oil pressure could be the oil pressure sending unit out of calibration or the oil pump relief valve sticking closed

I was driving the other night and the oil pressure jumped from 40 to 80 when I stepped on the gas but would drop back to 40 when i let off of the gas. The next morning heading in to work it pegged out at 80 and wouldn't come down. I changed the oil pressure sensor on the engine block and it dropped back to around 60 and is staying pretty consistent. I also changed the oil and filter. Is it normal or ok to run at 60 or should I be worried about it?

20 - 60 psi is the recommended operating range for oil pressure. You will be fine as long as it doesn't go back up to 80. That is when you need to worry.

I just changed the oil in my jeep cherokee and when I started it up the oil guage went off the scale. I checked to make sure that there was the correct amount of oil put in and filter. There is no burning smell and the engine seems to be running fine. What is this?

is it possible you knocked the wires off the oil pressure sensor.when you replaced the oil filter.

oil sending unit is a common cause for this type of problem. It is located near the oil filter.

Let me know if it fixes the problem.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 5.2 liter, 108,000 miles. The oil pressure is fluctuating on the high end of range, between 35 psi and 60 psi. I am seeing evidence of leaks (oil filter, pan gasket and both valve cover gaskets). Is all of this related? What repairs do I need to make?

Get an oil pressure test done. If it was too high it would buldge the oil filter...but in the mean time how dirty is the oil?

The gauge is working OK. I checked it with an external hand held meter. The oil filter is not bulging. the car gets an oil change about every 5 months or 5000 miles (whichever comes first, usually 5 months; don't do much driving here in Kainaliu, Hawaii..... which is part of the problem..... there a very few reliable mechanics in this neck of the woods).

1990 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0, Auto, 201,000 miles. Just changed the oil like I normally do using Mobil 10-40 with a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer. Been using this oil and additative for a while now since my rear main seal was leaking; now it is not. I started up the engine after the oil change, and my pressure at idle was around 40 (normal would be between 25 and 30), and when I went for a test drive, the pressure went up to 60 during normal operating speeds (normal is around 40). Even more strange is when I went up a hill, the oil pressure shot up to 80, and I eased off the gas and it came back down. Tried the hill several times with similar results. I dont know if I should try changing the oil again without Lucas, since Lucas has worked just fine for me for a long time. Thanks for your help!!

The only way to find out is remove the oil pressure sending unit, install a mechanical oil pressure gauge and read off-If its normal at idle and at 2000rpm's there's no problem-try replacing the OSU and check its connections.

Is the engine knocking or making some weird noises from the lower end of the engine when you accelerate/decelerate if not-check the oil pump pressure relief valve and for sludge.

The engine is running like a top. Before I get in to pulling the pan to check the pump, I think I'm going to try running a can of motor-flush through it, then drain and refil with regular 10-40 oil with no additives. If it is still acting up, I'll take it to the shop. Thanks for your help
