This is a very clean and well maintained Grand Cherokee Limited. Was driving with the radio on. After turning the radio down a noise can be heard coming from the engine. It sounds as if it is possibly a wrist pin. It does not sound low in the engine. I removed the valve cover and do not see anything out of the ordinary. Is there a common piston or wrist pin problem in these vehicles? This is a 4wd Jeep but can the oil pan still be removed without pulling the engine? Thanks for the help.

Is it like a tick? These are not known to be quiet motors. Remember these are a truck not a car. What do older trucks do??? Yep exactly they make noise.

After dropping the oil pan, I found the broken pieces of a piston skirt in it. It appears only one piston broke. I was expecting cylinder damage, however the cylinder is smooth with no marks at all. Hopefully I will be able to replace this piston and all bearings and be back on the road.
