Engine Won't Idle?

The day after I purchased this jeep it stalled as I was slowing down for a stop light. It started right back up and was ok other than idling a little rough at stops and some smoke coming out of the exhaust. On the way home from work that day the check engine light came on. The code said I needed to replace the upstream o2 sensor. I installed the new sensor, started it up and let it sit and idle for about 15 minutes. The check engine light was gone and it was great, no more smoke and the idle was very smooth, no more missing or erratic rpm's. Shut it off but restarted about an hour later to move it in the carport to replace the battery terminals that were trashed. I was having no problems with the battery but they were cracked and looked like they'd been beat with a hammer. I discovered that these were the terminals that had the cables attached which are not the kind I had purchased so I connected the terminals back up and decided to wait on them another day. When I started the vehicle it died immediately. That's what it's done every time since. I can keep it running if I keep my foot on the accelerator but its smoking again, a lot. When I do keep it running, most times the idle is erratic, jumping a few hundred rpm's then back down, and up again. There have been a few times that it's stayed running on it's own if I let my foot off the gas real slow but it hangs at 2 or 300 rpms and jumps up to 4 or 5 then back down like its going to die, then back up again. I put a load on the engine by turning on the ac but the idle doesnt move accordingly. As soon as I try to put it into gear, it dies. I spent days searching for a vacuum leak or loose connection somewhere to no avail. One odd thing I discovered is there are no relays in the PDC for either o2 sensor. Also, I found in the repair manual that when you replace a part relating to the exhaust system you need to have the codes cleared before you start the vehicle so I risked driving in to town to a shop but there were no codes to clear out. They cleaned the throttle housing and searched for a vacuum leak, still the same situation. Did I interrupt the process of the computer "relearning" the parameters by disconnecting the battery? Everything was great after the o2 sensor installation until I disconnected the battery. What could have gone wrong?? By the way, she ran fine when I drove her to town, very smooth, lots of power and only smoked when I first started out but again, I had to keep my foot on the gas when slowing down or stopping. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

sounds to me that you may need to clean out your throttle body. is it hard to start on cold starts or warm starts?

also if you run the car and shut it off does it do it if restarted a few hours later? does it do it if shut off and turned back on instantly?

the IAC is the Idle air controll valve and the TPS is the throttle position sensor and the fuel pressure is what the fuel pressure is at the fuel injectors the probblem could also be the fuel pressure regulator

213,000 miles 6 cyl. Car stalls when you put in reverse and right turns. Also stalled on the highway while doing 70 mph. (scary) Had emissions done 2 weeks ago (passed) Check engine light has been on for a couple of months, also the gas gauge has not worked in a long time either. Catalytic converter maybe? Fuel pump? Please help!
Thank you!

The first thing is the check engine light - been on for a couple of months. Hmmm... The light is telling you that there is a problem in the Emissions and engine control system, as determined by the "Engine computer/Powertrain Control Module". If the fault was just a glitch the PCM would have cleared the light after the problem wasn't detected anymore - it didn't.
Your Jeep has a diagnostic connector that will allow the computer-generated trouble codes to be read by a scanner, telling you what area(s) the computer says you have a problem in. Go to your local Autozone and have the codes read by them for FREE! If no autozone, call the local parts stores to see which one will do it for free. Your diagnostic system is called "OBD-II". The connector should be located at/under the bottm of the dash near the steering column, and is "oval/trapezoidal" shaped with two rows of pins, 8 in each row. Autozone can tell you what the fault codes mean - it won't guarantee a fix, but will point you in a direction.
Gas guage - possible sending unit problem from float in fuel tank, broken wire...goes from tank to gauge.
If you can start and drive it, then the fuel pump is probably ok, just shutting down due to computer problems. Computer can also shut down ignition system - no spark. Get the codes!!! Please post what you find out/fix for other folks to learn from! Good luck.

My vehicle is a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.
It is hard to start, you constantly have to keep giving it gas for it to stay running. The mechanic did a pressure test and cylinder six tested at 26, but rocker arm fell off and was laying inside. all the other cylinders tested between 125-130. I know I have to put this back on, but I think my problem may be a little more. The mechanic said he do not know much about working on valves, and just did the pressure test, but I do not know why he did not just put a rocker on it. So now I am stuck trying to find out the problem. I put in a new lash adjuster for that cylinder and bought a new rocker arm. Guess I should get rocker arm first. Any help or suggestions.
I watched tons of YouTube videos, but it is not as easy as they make it appear to be, I could not just pop it on like they did. It is an overhead cam also.
Thanks in advance!

you need a special tool to compress spring so you can put the rocker back on and make sure hydraulic lifter is full of oil . also so you do not bend a valve you need to go to chart and make sure corresponding cylinder is put to top dead center before you install. we have no pictures of tool it is Chrysler 8516 so maybe auto parts may have similar to rent. See pictures.

This is what the tool looks like, you don't just "pop" the rocker on as HMAC says you need to compress the valve spring.

I was testing the battery and radio wires today trying to figure out why the stereo doesn't work.
After giving up, we hopped in and the jeep wouldn't start.
I though I just drained the battery so I jumped it with my car.
It will turn over, but won't stay running.
If I hold my foot on the gas it will stay running, but the moment I take my foot off it instantly dies.
Could a bad battery cause this or maybe I fried the alternator?
What could be wrong?

Yep! that was it. I put in a different battery and it started right up. I guess at first it wasn't getting enough power to "learn" properly. Getting a new battery today since I discharged it to near zero.

Engine Performance problem
1996 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 125k miles

My Jeep won't start. Jumped it off, and it will stay running as long as the Rpms are up. When it drops to idle, it sputters and dies. While on and revving, all guages show normal, lights work, ect. After jump off and it dying, next morning, won't turn over. Battery seems drained. Father has suggested several parts that may be the problem, but I need to find what it is so I can fix it. He's suggested the fuel filter, alternator, frozen fuel line, or old battery. I'm doubting the frozen fuel line, but sure about the others.

I agree about the fuel line. If the battery is dead, I would start by removing it from the vehicle, recharging it, and haveing it load tested at a parts store. IF it fails the test, replace it.

Let me know what you find so we can move on. Also, let me know if the check engine light is on.

could be several things, I would start with the idle air control valve then go to the tps(throttle position sensor). I think you may need to replace the IAC but try cleaning it first, and the throttlebody

Thanks for the information. How do you check the torque converter and do you have to drop the transmission to fix it. also do you know about how much it costs to fix this problem. and is there some kind of way i can put my car in gear without it cutting off. until i am able to pay for this plus i can't drive it to the shop right now.

yes, you have to drop the transmission, but the solenoid can be disconnected, and you will have poor fuel economy.but you should be able to drive it. let me see if I can get a diagram to the convertor clutch solenoid

im sorry skully this vehicle does not have a disconnect for the solenoid. so the best thing for us to do at this point is to gain access to a scan tool, autozone will rent them, for a deposit and you get your money back when you return it. even a cheap one will give us a code, so we can be definite on this problem. becuase at this point we have no room for possibilities. keep me posted please

check for dirty air filter, plugged fuel filter, air intake control motor, MAF, TPS sensors, EGR solenoid, in that order. Could be plugged EGR passages, injectors, or failing fuel pump. It should store a trouble code for some of these. That would narrow it down.

when was the last time you had a tune up ( if its been some time I would start with this ) also replace your fuel filter and check vacuum hoses . if that no help get your codes checked out you may have a sensor going bad.

My 1996 Grand Cherokee began stalling at stoplights. Ran fine if RPMS were over 1200 or so. Changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter. This did not fix it. Had the fuel injectors serviced. Drive fine for a day then started stalling again. Changed the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. Now it runs much better, but will still occasionally stall. It usually happens when I come to a stoplight. Then, when I shift from drive to park, the RPMS will drop down to where it almost stalls, but then goes back to idle. Changing the IAC valve really helped, but has not fixed the problem completely. Do you have any suggestions as what to look at next?

Thanks,
Chris-Sacramento

We also discovered by pulling off the vacuum hose running from the master cylinder to the intake while it was running that the engine immediately ran at a higher RPM. Also, the tailpipe has black soot. Could my stalling/idle problems be the result of a bad O2 sensor?

You need a scantool to view the fuel trimmings to determine its the oxygen sensor. Have you checked the EGR valve-

Replace your MAP Sensor.

Had this same problem on a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee and no one could tell me what it was for years. Ended up replacing my transmission a few months later. Jeep no longer stalls at stop signs.
