1999 Jeep Cherokee Rear End Howls

My 1999 Grand Cherokee has 53,000 miles on it. At 35,000 miles I had the rear end replaced, bearings and gears. Jeep dealer said gears were worn. The Jeep has the "tow package" rear end, however, I have never towed anything. The rear end is again noisey and I'm going to have it repaired by an independent garage/mechanic. Is there anything I should have him look for, check out, or make sure he does to make the repair "right"?

Hi there,

when it is dismantled, your mechanic will see the wear patten and by this he will know what has gone wrong and what pr loads have not been set correctly. if he is competent, this will not be a problem.

sorry to interupt but i think i can help,i have worked at a jeep dealer for many years and have seen this problem numerous times,first of all pre-load is the amount of pressure that is put on the bearings,the main cause of the bearings going bad in the jeeps is that when dana put the housings together on these they were machined wrong causng to much pre load.the best way to get this fixed is to get a reman jasper complete rear end,if you just have new bearings put in you will have to do it again and again.hope this helps
