1998 Jeep Cherokee Engin dies when put into gear

1998 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

When I shift from park to drive engin shutters then dies, can be keeped running with foot on gas. I have been told that battery is bad but still starts vehical. What is causing problem?

Is the check engine light on? Sounds like your "IAC" idle air control valve is faulty. This unit controls engine idle when there us no gas pedal input, and during other conditions as determined by the pcm.
