1998 Jeep Cherokee dash lights

this problem has happened about 4 times lately. sometimes when you are driving the dash lights and dome lights and the instrument gages just started flashing like the car is possessed. then the other day went to go start the car and it would not turn over like everything was dead. went back about an hour and it started.thank you for any info. check battery terminals make sure they clean and tight
check alternator
