1997 Jeep Cherokee Clueless

The jeep belongs to my 18 yr old son. We have been told that 3 out of 6 ports on top of his engine were clogged. Do you have any suggestions. Would this cause it to run hot. Also, is it ok to drive without an oil pressure regulator (if you keep a close check on the oil.) Is the sole purpose of this device to give an accurate reading on the interior guage? git some port cleaner and run better grade fueland an air filter.
oil pressure regulator tells you if your oil pump is out and is some thing that preferably should work.full oil dosn't mean a thing if your oil pump dosn't push it though the motor. a repair manual should help you a lot
