1996 Jeep Cherokee the gas gauge

I am buying a cherokee but the gas gauge doesnt work at all it wont register if there is any gas in it or not, what could be wrong and how costly would it be to fix it?

Chances are the rheostat on the fuel float is bad. It is located in the fuel tank and part of the fuel pump.
