1996 Jeep Cherokee Shuddering stop

I recently had my transmission checked out due to leaking fluid and a heavy start in the first few gears. The mechanic tightened a loose hose and diagnosed the main problem as bad gear change solenoids. He replace all three and said the solenoids need to break in. Now when I drive it accelerates fine with slightly noticable gear changes. The thing bugging me is when slowing to stop. Just before coming to a complete stop, the jeep shudders. The RPMs drop momentarily but then it idles normally. I'm not so sure if the repairs were done correctly and I dont want to take it to another mechanic if this is normal and will go away.

Solenoids dont really "Break -in). They are basically just a valve with an electric motor working it.Have you mentioned this to the original shop that did the repairs? I would take it to them and go for adrive with one of the techs so that you can let them know exactly what it is doing.The trans shouldnt shudder ever.

Actually I think he said the whole valve body was going to take some time to break in. He did say that it would be changing gears kind of hard for a bit and that would go away. I just dont know, I have to make a 600 mile drive soon and I dont want the thing breaking down in the middle of nowhere!

Upon talking with the mechanic that worked on my transmission, his guess on why the shuddering happens is due to wear on the clutch plates and is suggesting finding a new tranny or having it rebuilt. Is it possible to just get replacement clutch plates?

That would basically be a rebuild.By the time you replace all the necessary gaskets and seals to do the clutches, you have basically rebuilt the trans.Since they have already done the valve body, it shouldnt be quite as much as normal, but it will be close.May want to take it to another trans shop for a second opinion, just to be sure there are no external adjustments that can be made.
