1996 Jeep Cherokee replaced head

Engine Performance problem
1996 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Manual unknow miles

just replaced head after bad overheat and can't get yhr engine to idle smoothly backfires mostly thru exhaust and hard to start. checked it si right on and ckecked dist, rotor, wired etc. all wires and sensors are connected. sounds like afunny car when it starts. used a new head gasket and intake gasket replaced plugs. any ideas?

What was the proceedure you used an the valve train?
Was there a lot of water in oil ie. looked like a chocolate malt?

oil was a little milky and i first just snuged the rocker bolts down starting in the center and working my way out to the ends of head. since there is no adjustment to valves i then finished tightening them using same pattern. all push rods and rockers are working and lots of oil getting thru. and of course i did change oil and filter before staring engine for the first time. maybe i need to do rocker bolts differently?

No you did rocker just fine. Did you happen have a machine shop look at the head and valves? When they get hot exhaust valves can warp and you do have hard start and exhaust backfire.

no machine shop bought head from local junk yard this reputable and have used bsfore. i just inspected head for cracks and the like. it seem to be fine and was actually a new looking head. (orginal paint on head) oe maybe had already been rebuilt. but couldn't really say condition of valves other than look good from visual inspection. engine it came from may have a new engine, counter man said the heads are the same.

Do a compression test and post the results.

ran test twice starting with no.1 readings as follows: 130,125
no.2 130, 125
no.3 124, 120
no.4 129, 129
no.5 130, 135
no.6 120, 124......
also no.3 had oil shooting out of it particularly after test. all cylinders had aminor amout of oil coming from them, bur the valve cover is not anchored either. also i had not put coolant in yet as iwanted to wait until the engine was actually running. could it be the new head gasket did not seal or the used head is bad?

pull head back off this a.m. gasket was tightly sealed to head but, was loose on block side. check block for cracks etc. in and around cylinders, didn't find anything other than normal scarring from old carbon at top of the bore above where piston would top out. haven't found anything unusual on head either. willpost later th let you know it turns out.
