1996 Jeep Cherokee Repari of

I was told that to repair the air conditioning on a JGC1996 they would have to remove the the dash board. I have talked to other owners and all have said they never heard of that before. The compressor is good bud does not hold freon they say. Is this correct of not? Thanks andy
