1995 Jeep Cherokee muffler rattling

Hi:
Where is the trans leaking from? Also, take a rubber mallot and tap on the muffler to determine if the insides are loose. Finally, what color smoke is coming from the exhaust, blue, white, black...

Hi Joe, thanks for looking at my question. The smoke is grey. Light color. The transmission is leaking from the front. The trans. went out 6 wks. after i bought it, they replaced it, then about a year later it went out again, and i had it completely replaced. Now it has started leaking again. As long as I keep putting fluid in it, it's ok. Altho, I no longer drive it at all. I got a different car, and now with it randomly smoking, and the rattle is worse than ever. I will try the mallot thing tho, and i'm thinking the trans.,is just a seal. who knows. Mechanics tend to take advantage when a woman walks in alone, no offense to all the mechanics out there, but it's true. Any info is helpful. Thanx.......

If the trans fluid is coming from the front and dripping from where the trand and engine
meet, the front output shaft seal is most likely leaking. It's only about a 10 dollar part, but the trans needs removed to replace it. As far as the gray smoke, I question if coolant is getting into the combustion chamber as a result of a bad head gasket. (very odd on this engine) And as far as the rattle, check it and let me know what you find. If it's a heat shield, it's and easy , cheap fix. If it's a converter (loose inside) not hard to replace, but the converter will be a couple hundred dollar part.

Thank you so much for your help. I have a neighbor that does transmissions for a living, and he's going to look at it tonite. The heat sheild makes sense, it tends to run hot. Wouldn't the converter or head gasket cause the rattle also? I'll let you know what my neighbor says. But thank yu so much for getting back to me. It is much appreciated!! Lorri

The head gasket won't cause a rattle, but if the insides of the converter have come loose, it will rattle and it could cause the engine to run hot.
