crankshaft sensor replacement

CAUTION: On some models, two bolts are used to secure sensor to transmission. These bolts are specially machined to correctly space the sensor to flywheel. Do not attempt to install any other bolts. Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor 4.0L

REMOVAL 1.Disconnect negative battery cable. 2.Disconnect sensor electrical connector, located near rear of intake manifold 3.Remove nut holding sensor wiring clip to fuel rail. 4.Remove sensor mounting bolt(s) or nuts. 5.Remove the sensor from vehicle. 6.Remove clip from sensor wiring harness. INSTALLATION 1.Position crankshaft position sensor flush against the opening in transmission housing. 2.Install sensor mounting bolts or nuts and torque to 19 Nm (14 ft-lbs) . 3.Connect the electrical connector to the sensor. 4.Install clip on sensor wire. 5.Install clip over fuel rail stud and tighten mounting nut.

thanks but i know the procedure to take it out. i need to know how to get in there. the actual space is no where near as open as the illustration would lead you to believe. cant get a wrench or a ratchet in there. the only thing i could think of was lowering the engine but im hoping for an easier way

Have you tried a universal socket?

Question. Are you having a problem with it cranking? The best thing I can find with my problem is the crankshaft sensor. I couldn't see how to get to the bolts either. Have you had any luck?

Hey i used long extension on a ratchet also had a swivel on the socket think it was 10mm or 11mm 6 point hope this helps. Tim.

Is there a way to find out which bolt pattern I have on my jeep without removing it? Need to know which one to get a 1 bolt or a 2 bolt cranksensor

They made it both ways so you will need to look here is what the one bolt looks like. Use a flashlight and you should be able to see it.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition with a 4.0 liter engine that likes to turn off randomly. i had tested for spark from the ignition coil to the distributor, but i would get nothing. I have went through three coils in one week. when i replace the coil it works fine. but usually ends up dieing again. today it died after replacing the coil and i waited a few minutes as i pushed the jeep to the side of the road and it started back up again. I went to my dad and a few people with excellent car knowledge and they suggested a camshaft sensor or crankshaft sensor memory is not so well and cant remember but however I am going to try it out and see how it works because i was told that some jeeps are known for this issue and that is most likely the solution.

Chances are it is the crank sensor. THe cam sensors rarely go bad on these. I have to ask, has the check engine light ever come on? Also, does it alway restart after sitting and cooling, or were the other coils burned up? If they were, my next concern would be the PCM. Power to the ignition is higher when in the start position. When the key goes to the run position, the PCM cuts down the power to the ignition. The system needs a hotter spark when starting, then it doesn't need as much when running. This set up protects the system making it last a lot longer.

You might test the wiring circuits to the cam and crank sensors. They share ref voltage and ground. For the cam sensor, the signal wire is tan with yellow stripe, the ref voltage is orange for both sensors, the ground circuit for both senors is black with lite blue tracer. To chek the signal wires, the vehicle needs to cranking, to watch for a pulse. Or you might turn on the key, turn the crank by hand, watch the voltage switch from high to low.

Engine Mechanical problem
1995 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 200k miles

Recently, my car stalled while I was pulling into a parking space at the grocery store. I was able to start it back up, but it promptly stalled a second time. I was able to make it home withouth the car stalling a third time. It did, however, happen a third time the following day. I noticed that each time it happened, I was idling at a low RPM, but driving at higher speeds didn't seem to be a problem, and it hasn't happened again in the past two weeks.
Just to be on the safe side, I took my car to the mechanic and he is suggesting that I replace the crank sensor. Does this sound like a good call? Can this problem wait to be repaired? If so how long, and what will happen if I wait too long?

Has the check engine light come on? Also, has he checked the vehicle or is he just assuming that is the problem because other things can cause this type of problem.

I recently bought this old gal from a friend of mine. She said she never had any trouble out of it but it was her play truck. It just stalls out it seems at anytime, sometimes though maybe after you turn right, maybe. It stalls all the time, fast or slow, sometimes just dies and comes back all by itself, other times starts right back up. sometimes i can pop it in neutral while still moving and turn the key and it runs again. Other time i have to wait 10 minutes. today it wouldn't start back up and still won't the next day. I tried several times over the course of an hour and a half before i gave up. It seems to do better with higher octane gas and fuel injector cleaner or octane boost in it. and for a couple of weeks it didn't do it at all. Ive been driving it for 2 months with this problem and always gotten it to start back up. I've been looking at hundreds of posts and lots of people are saying crankshaft position sensor. Others have posed changing screws in ecu/pcu, or even changing out an o-ring somewhere, or a dirty fuse. It seems there are a million things to try. i just don't have the time to tinker around with this truck. i only gave $500 for it. and when it runs its awesome. i was wandering if you guys could offer me any advice.

Check fuel pressure and/or (efficiency) volume flow. It my have good pressure but not able to deliver the amount of fuel that it should.

your problem sounds like mine after all the things i did it was the crankshaft position sensor
