If everything was ok electrically before you did the starter, explain what steps you did to disconnect, then reconnect the starter?
Removal & Installation (Cherokee & Wrangler - 4.0L) Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect battery cable and solenoid feed wire from solenoid. Remove starter lower mounting bolt. Remove starter upper mounting bolt and remove starter. To install, reverse removal procedure. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Removal & Installation (Grand Cherokee - 4.0L) Disconnect battery negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect battery wire and solenoid feed wire connector. Remove starter front mounting bolt. Remove starter rear mounting bolt and remove starter. To install, reverse removal procedure.

First we disconnected the batter cables. Second we disconnected the solenoid cable and then took off the two bolts that hold it on. Then, I put the new starter on. I connected the bolts first and then the solenoid cable. Finally I reconnected the battery cables, and I am not sure which one was connected first, the positive or the negative.

OK try this, dissconnect the battery cable in this order, negative, positive, now clean BOTH cable ends and bettery posts, they have a special brush to do this... now attach the positve then the negative and let me know what happens. Now one other question, did ANYTHING spark when you worked on it?
