1993 Jeep Cherokee knocking noises

when i turn my jeep on or drive it, it sounds like it is making a knocking noise like there is a rock in the engine somewhere. took it to machanic and they said they didnt find anything. Do you think it could be a bad lifter?

If it sounds like a knock, I will say the 4.0L does have a natural (slight) knock to it. If it is very loud, I would guess a rod or main bearing on the low end of the engine. A lifter will make more of a ticking sound rather than a knock.
