1993 Jeep Cherokee Cranky Jeep

put yourself a funnel in the gas tank and put your ear on it and have someone turn the key. is the hum coming from the tank or no?

As of today it's been established that the second hum that I hear is in fact the fuel pump doing what it's supposed to do. The question now stands as why does it take so long for it to kick in? Thanks!

when turning the key first it instantly turns on right?

next step is watch the tachometer. is it at 0 untill the buzz then it jumps up and reads the RPM or is it showing a rpm reading but still no buzz?

hows the oil pressure look when cranking

Well, when the key is put to the on position, there is a short buzz, that appears to coming from over my right shoulder, but it doesn't stay on. Then, as the motor is being cranked, it just cranks away for quite awhile, until I hear something from what appears to be over my left shoulder come on, and stay on, and that's when the Jeep fires up. Unfortunately I have no tach, just an oversized fuel gauge, and the oil pressure looks ok....if that helps.

take out the fuel pump relay and jump it across the terminalls and try to crank it. will it crank and fire up now or no?

UPDATE: After a week or so of no-starts, called a friend who found out that the fuel pump was actually losing it's prime. This was a part that was replaced back in October, so I didn't even think of it as being the culprit. Needed a coil wire too. Jeep's running quite well now.....film at 11, I guess. Thanks for the tips and tricks!
