When pursuing what seemed to be a sudden leak of a significant amount of oil, I found that there was about 1-2 inches of oil in the bottom of the air filter. It appears that this oil is what had leaked out and became visible on the ground. I am not sure how long this has been a problem, since the vehicle burns oil and requires additional oil ever week or two (depending on miles traveled). I am trying to figure out what would cause oil to accumulate in this area.

One thing that could cause oil in your air box is a bad pcv valve, it is located on top of the valve cover, a hose goes from it to the side of the air box.
